An auto mechanic performs maintenance, diagnostic testing, repairs, and inspections of small trucks and cars. They work on engines, drive belts, transmissions, and electronic systems such as steering, brakes, and accident-avoidance systems. The job requires excellent technical skills as well as a working knowledge of the mechanical functions of a variety of makes and models of domestic and foreign vehicles.
A high school diploma is the minimum educational requirement for auto mechanics. Most mechanics attend a postsecondary automotive program at a vocational school or community college to obtain certification. Programs last from six months to two years and may lead to an associate’s degree. Mechanics can also opt for an apprenticeship with a certified technician that lasts from one to three years.
Auto mechanics should have strong communication skills since they must explain technical information in layman’s terms to customers. They must also be able to diagnose the problem with a vehicle rapidly and accurately in order to give customers an accurate estimate for repair costs.
